Pond's Femina Miss India finalists with Cory Walia

Makeup expert Cory Walia shared the tricks of his trade with the finalists of the Miss India 2013 pageant.

While makeup guru Cory Walia had already interacted with the finalists of the Pond's Femina Miss India 2013 pagaent, he also met them personally recently. Cory was impressed with the poise and confidence the girls displayed, which had increased dramatically after the multi-city eliminations. "What pleased me was the alert and sincere attitude that I saw during my session with them. They avidly took in everything that I was imparting to them," he said.

To give the girls a fresh look, Cory used the Pale Pink Eyeshadow from the Lakme Desert Rose Quartet on the lid and the Pearl White from the Silk Route Quartet as a highlighter in order to keep the look fresh and lay emphasis on the sockets. "It looks groomed and dressed up, but not overtly made up. And when you have very little time on your hands, it is also very easy to convert a fresh day look to a softly glamorous sultry look with the addition of the Lakme Absolute Kohl pencil. First, I used the pencil to create a broad eyeliner on the top eyelid. Then I smudged and smoothly blended it upwards to create a soft, smoky effect. Then I generously used the kohl pencil on the inside of both the upper and lower eyelids. Lastly, I smudged the kohl on the lower eyelid very lightly so as to create a smoky and not a scary effect. I intensified the lip colour by adding the Lakme Plump and Shine Lip Gloss. Lastly, Eyeconic mascara brought emphasis to the eyes," added Cory.

As he interacted with the girls, Cory shared anecdotes peppered with humour, which made the finalists relax and laugh. They were quick to understand how to get the 'day to night look' and realised the philosophy of 'less is more' and as well as the other tips and tricks that will help them during the contest. "I told them how the details and invisible things really matter," ended the makeup maverick.

Payal Gidwani Tiwari, the official fitness expert for the Pond's Femina Miss India 2013 pagaent, had a special task in front of her — to train the finalists and make them undergo a complete physical transformation. Talking about the task, Payal says, "My aim was to use the benefits of ancient yoga and discipline the girls through easy-to-understand techniques along with a clearly chalked out lifestyle plan, tailor-made to suit each girl's needs." With an objective to enhance the physical, emotional and spiritual quality of their lives, Payal mixed yoga, calisthenics and functional training as a part of their training regime. This form of exercise consisting of a variety of simple, often rhythmical movements, increases body strength and flexibility with movements such as bending, jumping, swinging, twisting or kicking, using only one's body weight for resistance. Alongwith yoga, this helps increase awareness of the mind.

The girls were made to do a sequence of asanas, pranayams, meditation and kriyas to assist them during the contest, and even after the pagaent is over. "The idea is to take a more holistic approach to life. The asanas help correcting posture because all the postural muscles are exercised in maintaining the erect posture of the body and increasing flexibility. It helps in weight loss, body toning, relieving stress, increasing energy levels, and giving them a better intuition," adds Payal.

Pranayam improves the rate of breathing, reduce the heart rate and decrease the the wear and tear of the heart.

Dreams come true but they are realized only once we wake up to turn them into reality. Beauty pageants are often perceived as contests that do not go beyond women striking a pretty pose for shutterbugs, walking the 'right' walk on the ramp, blowing kisses to the audience and above all trying to live up to the favourite cliche of 'beauty with brains'. Judgments, notions and opinions are formed on the basis of what we see on stage but actual truths reside off screen where contestants struggle hard to make themselves capable of adorning the glittering crown on the final day.

We spoke to a few Miss Indias who have been there, done that and conquered all. They share with us some valuable tips on what it takes to be a picture-perfect Miss India.

Anukriti Gusain , one of the finalists who would be competing with other equally worthy beauties on the finale night of the Miss India 2013, hails from the beautiful cantonment town of Lansdowne in Uttarakhand and was adjudged Miss Timeless Beauty and Miss Glowing Skin during the state pageant. It would only be fair to ask Anukriti to shed light on how to polish yourself in order to confirm a radiant victory in the beauty contest. "As an engineering student, I had a very poor exercise routine, but now I am improving on that front. I try to eat healthy and maintain a balanced diet that includes lots of fruits and green vegetables. I play basketball, a great fitness sport that keeps me in shape. Above all, I go by this mantra- 'believe in yourself and forget about others'," Anukriti shares.

Remember our very own Vanya Mishra who made it to the coveted list of 82 names shortlisted for the Most Desirable Woman 2012? It would be grave injustice to not have Vanya discuss secret mantras on cracking the Miss India exam. The winner of Miss Beauty with a Purpose title at Miss World, Vanya says, "Being 'Desirable' to me would mean to be attractive and possessing the qualities that make other people desire to be like you".

Gail D' Silva , another proud finalist to have made her way through, thinks Miss India is the 'Olympics of beauty' and the crown is not just a beautiful trophy to be kept at one corner of the living room but worth a lot more. Ask her what is her winning strategy and pat comes the reply, "My winning strategy would be to stay calm, focused and confident all through the competition. My level of patience and optimistic outlook set me apart from the fellow contestants".

She is India's first beauty queen, an inspiration for many and a precious asset to the country. Meher Castelino Mistry was crowned Miss India in the year 1964, an era when fashion was not an enviable industry like today, but considered a 'taboo'. She raises a pertinent point and says, "Always attempt to highlight your plus points and conceal your minuses. Be brutally honest with your shortcomings and stop imagining what you are not".

She was awarded the Bollywood Diva title at the Miss India pageant 2010, apart from being declared the Pantaloons Femina Miss Fresh Face, Miss Professional and Online winner. Neha Hinge was a software engineer until she decided to follow her true calling. "During my training sessions at Miss India, I slowly started looking into the camera as opposed to keeping my eyes closed with fear, and guess what, I not only walked my way through to the Miss India stage, I won too!"

Miss India International 2002 Gauhar Khan is a passionate performer at heart and it is her love for work that made her face all hurdles. "I can't sit idle at home. All my happiness, creative satisfaction and sense of enrichment depend on the work I do. My work brings out a 'better me' every day," she says. Rochelle Maria Rao , Miss India International 2012 was apprehensive about participating in Miss India after she secured the second spot at the state pageant and concluded she was not good enough. Her fantasy was however turned into a fairytale reality when she refused to lose hope and decided to fight back until the Miss India International crown had her name on it. "Pressure does not get into the middle of my focus. I am used to handling all pressures by now and I am very confident of how I represent myself to the world," she says.

"Fast track events and talent rounds are often considered of marginal significance. One should know that these are definitely not peripheral events. Points earned in each of the individual competitions add up to a cumulative score that in turn contribute to the final assessment of a contestant on the finale night," advisesHasleen Kaur , Miss India Earth 2011.
